In our October/November issue, we told you about the University of Texas’ decision to allow a former Stanford women’s basketball player who had suffered from repeated concussions onto its team. In April, Jamie Carey helped the Longhorns to their first Final Four in over a decade and her story was a big one.
The University instituted a set of guidelines for Carey to follow, including reporting any injuries or symptoms to athletic trainers and wearing a specially designed mouthguard. Her season ended with many honors, including Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Year. Most important, it also ended injury-free and bearing the good news that those with a history of concussions can sometimes—with the proper healthcare and precautions—return to the sport they love.
