It’s a common complaint that good kids don’t make the news. The U.S. Navy wants to change that by shining a spotlight on athletes who are making a difference.
In May, the U.S. Navy announced the members of its U.S. Navy Scholastic All-America Teams (USNSAAT) for softball. Modeled after the GTE Academic All-America teams at the collegiate level, the Navy program’s purpose is to reward high school student-athletes across the country who excel in sports and academics, and volunteer in their communities.
“The program is a great opportunity to recognize and highlight the academic, community, and athletic excellence of today’s youth,” said Rear Admiral Barbara McGann (Commander, Navy Recruiting Command). “Our youth are our future and deserve our praise for their outstanding contributions during their high school years.”
The program’s co-sponsor, the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA), assisted in choosing the winning teams. The U.S. Navy Scholastic All-America Teams also recognizes high school football, baseball, and volleyball athletes, as well as high school coaches and athletic directors.
